A Tribute to a Lifetime of Service
By Cora Shahid and Kasey Cain, California Hands & Voices
How can one truly capture the depth of gratitude owed to someone who has devoted nearly 50 years to serving Deaf and Hard of Hearing children and their families? While words may fall short, California Hands & Voices will endeavor to honor Nancy Grosz Sager’s extraordinary legacy.
As Nancy embarks on new adventures beyond California, we want to recognize the
transformative impact she has had on our community. Her tireless efforts have not only touched countless families and their Deaf and Hard of Hearing (D/HH) children but have also inspired a new generation of educators and advocates. Nancy’s passion and dedication have shaped a brighter future for many, and her legacy will continue to resonate in the hearts of those she has influenced.
About Nancy Sager
Nancy earned her bachelor’s degree in anthropology from the University of California, Santa Barbara, in 1974. Discovering her passion for sign language, Deaf culture, and teaching, she was encouraged by her mentors at Fresno State to pursue a graduate degree, renowned for its leading deaf education program. Nancy earned her master’s degree in 1977, along with multiple credentials. Over her illustrious career, she spent 21 years teaching and seven years as the Special Education Program Coordinator for the Sutter County Superintendent of Schools Office, managing services across 12 districts. Nancy then served as a Deaf and Hard of Hearing Programs Consultant for the California Depart. of Ed. for 18 years before retirement.
Nancy has always been a staunch supporter of parents, generously offering her time, talent,
and expertise. She also provided financial support both personally and through grant writing, paving the way for many opportunities for parents to attend conferences and to receive parent-to-parent support and engagement opportunities across the state. Since California Hands & Voices was established in 2012, Nancy has been a dedicated board member. She served as an ASTra Advocate when the program launched in California in 2019. Before that, she was a board member for IMPACT, a statewide non-profit organization of parents, teachers, and professionals serving D/HH children. She has been a member of countless other nonprofit organizations dedicated to ensuring all D/HH children reach their highest potential. At every stage, Nancy worked tirelessly to create opportunities for parents to enhance their advocacy and leadership skills. In honor of that work, she was awarded The Hands & Voices Seaver Vision Award in 2017. This honor is given annually to a parent, professional, organization, or agency that exemplifies the values and commitment to the Hands & Voices vision.
Nancy’s Legacy of Love
“I first met Nancy at a conference for parents of D/HH children and the professionals who serve them when my son was just nine months old. Since then, Nancy and I have attended countless conferences together and shared many hotel rooms. After 20 years, her name is woven into every phase of our family’s story and my journey into parent leadership. Nancy’s steadfast support will have a lifelong influence on my son. When he was initially denied an IEP at age three, Nancy guided me through the steps to successfully secure one. As a mother first, I am deeply grateful for how she positively influenced my son’s life as well as the lives of hundreds–if not thousands–of others. Nancy, thank you for empowering parents like me to be informed and involved in the decisions that shape our children’s futures. You have made an indelible mark not just on individual families but on our entire community.”
~Cora Shahid, Executive Director of CA H&V
“What we will remember most about Nancy is that she was always more than just a board member. She was a friend to each of us, making us feel seen, heard, and fully supported as we navigated the complexities of raising D/HH children. At events, Nancy could always be found with a baby in her lap, once remarking that she is the honorary grandma to all the D/HH children in our community. Her insight and wisdom were often available at a moment’s notice when parents needed advice or advocacy resources, providing guidance that made us feel cherished and valued.
In addition to supporting parents, Nancy is consistently present in meaningful ways for our children. Whether advocating for legislative changes for our community at the state capitol or attending our children’s recitals and performances, her dedication is unwavering. She even goes the extra mile by asking for a child’s autograph—an act of encouragement that fosters joy and inspires dreams in our children.
Nancy has always been there—a constant and dependable presence supporting our community and children. I will deeply miss seeing her at every event and learning from her both professionally and personally. She is a true wealth of knowledge. California is losing a legend.”
