Hands & Voices Programs and Projects

Hands & Voices at-a-Glance

Hands & Voices Programs

Hands & Voices Programs are formalized, require an application & approval process, include program operations & policy requirements, are subject to an MOU process, and are only replicable in individual Hands & VoicesTM Chapters.

  • Hands & Voices Guide By Your SideTM Program (GBYS) is a family support program that embodies the mission and vision of Hands & Voices ™ through specially trained parents of children who are deaf or hard of hearing who work as “Guides” directly with families. GBYS Programs also include an option for Deaf/Hard of Hearing Guides (DHH Guides) who are deaf or hard of hearing adults who are specially trained to provide support to families. link
  • Hands & Voices Advocacy Support and TrainingTM Program (ASTra) is a Deaf and Hard of Hearing Educational Advocacy Program that embodies the mission and vision of Hands & Voices, so that every child who is D/HH has the opportunity to achieve their full potential. ASTra content is derived from years of direct advocacy experience working with families in schools, attending advocacy trainings from legal experts, providing trainings, and the Hands & Voices Educational Advocacy Guidebook (©2013). link
  • H&V Leadership-to-LeadershipTM (L2L) Program provides leadership development skills to current Hands & Voices parent leaders and supports the sustainability of Chapters and programs through a proactive approach to leadership development and succession planning. The program provides a one-year training opportunity to a cohort of H&V parent leaders who seek to increase their knowledge and skills in the areas of: personal leadership development; supporting and leading others; and working with organizations, agencies, and individuals to create systems level impact. link

Hands & Voices Projects

Hands & Voices Projects consist of concrete and organized efforts motivated by a perceived opportunity when facing a particular problem or need within our population; they may be temporary or sustained over time and may end when specific goals have been reached.

  • Hands & Voices  recognizes that a significant number of families across H&V Chapters and programs use Spanish as a first language. The H&V Council and Forum for Latino Family Support exists to help expand already existing efforts in local Chapters as well as at H&V HQ. This project draws upon broad-based input from a wide range of interested participants who serve Latino families with the purposes of pooling resources, providing thought leadership, and formalizing support for innovation around supporting families who are Spanish speaking. link Resources in Spanish
  • Fostering Joy Project is a family/professional effort celebrating the joy of raising a child who is deaf or hard of hearing (D/HH). It provides support and resources for families and professionals to positively help the growth and development of a child who is D/HH. link
  • Observe, Understand and Respond (O.U.R.) Project is a Community of Learners, comprised of parents, family members and professionals, who explore and develop activities that will work to increase the safety and success of children who are deaf or hard of hearing. This group focuses on issues to increase awareness and understanding surrounding prevention of child maltreatment, neglect, and abuse for deaf, hard of hearing and deaf plus children. link
  • Hands & Voices Military Project believes that together through awareness, collaboration, and support, we can aide in the timely support for active duty and the retired armed forces community. This virtual community aims to connect families to local H&V Chapters to help families of children who are DHH feel prepared to navigate through each new duty station and is a place to share experiences, ask questions, and help others with questions. link
