Songs and Accessibility to Music

Whatever path you choose with your family, know that Hands and Voices is here for you, as we continue to celebrate the month of October and the many years of Hands and Voices I leave you with this GREAT commercial about a family sharing a musical moment.

Hello Families!

We have discussed a lot about how Hands and Voices is all about what’s right for your child is what makes the choice right. Something that is always a hot topic for families who have children with different hearing levels is the emotions about Music.

How will my child share music with me? I Love music and I want to share singing with my child! My house of worship is largely based with music and how will I be able to share that aspect of our family with my child?

I have amazing news for you: Music is such a fantastic part of the Deaf community.

  • Everything from DPAN that makes music videos in ASL and feature Deaf musicians: Link
  • To Deaf artists who re-imagine what the world of sound looks like and make beautiful music and present on TED talks: Link
  • Many companies, if this is a route your family is taking, like Advance Bionics has different technology that supports music like never before: Link

Churches and other types of worship are sharing their youtube videos with songs every day, especially now during this time of Shelter in Place to share with people at home when we can’t gather safely yet. Something that is exciting for our younger friends is that  I learned something very interesting over the last couple of weeks. As part of SB 210 for DHH children we want to make sure our students are Kindergarten ready right?

Did you know that there is a movement to CHANGE THE ABC SONG???

Even typically developing hearing children believe that “LMNOP” is one letter going into kinder and that “YandZ” is also one letter. Typically developing hearing children tend to also only ever know the ABC song as a song…and struggle to transition to knowing the letters. This can be especially true for all of your families that have multiple languages going on at home!

So here I present: THE NEW ABC SONG

Here is also a good article about it from NPR and more recent discussions regarding the boom around the change for this song:
